The Collegium Musicum

The performers in such works must have included members of the Collegium Musicum. There were actually two organizations of this type in Leipzig when Bach arrived. One, founded by Telemann during his university years (1701–1705), was now directed by Schott, of the New Church. The other, subsequently founded by Fasch during his university years, was led by Görner at the university church. Early accounts describe the group founded by Telemann as having from forty to sixty members and giving concerts twice weekly; by Bach’s time the two groups were each performing once a week—twice during the Leipzig fairs.29 The older group performed at the coffeehouse established in 1717 by Gottfried Zimmermann, on the ground floor of a grand building on the city’s most fashionable street or, during the summer, in his outdoor coffee garden (Figure 10.2).30
